Dutch Humour As An Important Part Of Our Culture.

Even though you would typically start a selection like this with a general overview, we will make an exception for this video from Arjen Lubach, a Dutch talk show host. This video has gone viral on the internet with more than 27 million views and is by far the most popular video about The Netherlands ever….!

The video is so funny because it combines the Netherlands’ self-irony with a fantastic imitation of President Trump. The video is also very outspoken, which is an integral part of our culture, and can be a culture shock for many visitors from abroad.

This video with American teenagers watching the video from Arjen Lubach got an incredible 6.4 million views itself and is a great way to appreciate the cultural differences. Luckily, these American teenagers appreciated the humor of Arjen Lubach enough to enjoy his video wildly.

Amsterdam Is On Everybody’s Bucket List

I realize that most visitors to The Netherlands are coming first and foremost to visit Amsterdam, and we understand that. I have lived a few years in Amsterdam and still love this enchanting city dearly.

I am a huge fan of Ricky Steves, the maker of this video. He describes Amsterdam eloquently when he said that Amsterdam is perhaps Europe’s best-preserved 17th-century city while, at the same time, Amsterdam has a fun contemporary edge. In his words, Amsterdam is an exciting place, inspired by a time-honored “live and let live”….! Thank you, Mr. Steves; we couldn’t have said it better ourselves.

We highly encourage you to enjoy the pleasant video below, which more than 1,8 mln other people have already done before you.

But there is much more to The Netherlands than just Amsterdam. We strongly encourage you to watch another Ricky Steves video about the Netherlands below that has already gotten more than 3,7 million views.

The Netherlands Beyond Amsterdam

We hope that your visit to The Netherlands will not be limited to Amsterdam because there is so much more to see and enjoy in our little country bordering the North Sea, including lovely beaches and beautiful colorful tulip fields all over The Netherlands.

In the video below, Ricky spends a few pleasant days below sea level in other parts of The Netherlands and paints an excellent view of our country. Ricky gets it and, as far as we are concerned, he is very welcome to come over and live here among us because we figure that the will be very happy here.

Those were the days of “wooden ships and iron men,” but the video below shows another side of today’s culture and some of the drawbacks of our tolerance.

The Other Side Of “Live And Let Live”

As I said already above, tolerance or “live and let live” is an integral part of our Dutch culture. We even have an insane habit and the word “gedogen” for having a law but not obey that law. Yes, you read that right, and we fully understand that it will be hard to believe that you don’t have to follow some rules. Nevertheless, it is true…..!

You can see this attitude of tolerance, and the occasional insanity behind it, also coming back in how the Dutch celebrate New Year’s Eve. We fully understand that foreigners will question some Dutch people’s mental state when you watch the video below about New Year’s celebrations in The Netherlands.

This video has already gotten 1,7 mln views on Youtube because, yes, it is a hilarious video made by some Americans with a great video channel, “how to survive the Dutch”. As I said, we love self-irony in The Netherlands, so we appreciate that channel a lot; thank you, guys…..!

Fortunately, other, more innocent aspects of our culture are sometimes considered strange by foreigners.

Expats Living Here Give Their Opinion About The Netherlands

That is a good mirror for us to look into and a good way for you to appreciate how other foreigners have experienced Dutch culture, our habits, and our weather. Hilarious and has already been viewed more than 1.2 million times on Youtube.

And finally, let’s talk about something in The Netherlands that is not that wonderful, our cuisine. But don’t worry, you will survive our kitchen as we have already done ourselves for centuries…..!

Our Strength Is Not In Our Cuisine

You have to know your weaknesses, don’t you….? And cooking and food is, mildly put, not the best-developed part of Dutch culture. That becomes crystal-clear when you watch this video of American children trying out Dutch food.

This video has been watched more than 3.9 million times on Youtube. It is indeed very amusing, and we understand why this video has gone viral.
