Austria Has Recorded Over 39 Million Overnight Stays So Far This Summer


The summer tourism season in 2023 so far, from May to the end of July, has recorded around 39.50 million overnight stays in Austrian accommodation establishments, as shown by the latest statistics.

According to Austria’s Agency of Statistics, this number showed a 6.3 per cent increase compared to a year ago and a 1.7 per cent growth compared to the pre-pandemic period, reports.

Commenting on these data, Tobia Thomas, Director General of Statistics Austria, pointed out that at the beginning of the summer season this year, there was an increased demand for vacations in Austria compared to previous years. As a result, he noted that over 70 per cent of total overnight stays can be attributed to international visitors.

“In the current 2023 summer season (May to July), 39.50 million guest nights were reported, up 6.3 per cent from last year. Non-resident guests contributed 27.54 million (+10.5 per cent) to the positive result,” the report reads.

Statistics Austria explains that after the country achieved a record 12.24 million guest nights from residents at the beginning of the last summer season, this number fell to 11.96 million (-2.2 per cent) within May-July 2023.

In addition, from May to September last year, a total of 77.89 million overnight stays were reported, which shows a decrease of 1.4 per cent compared to the summer of 2019.

Resident guests account for 24.32 million nights spent during the summer of 2022, while non-resident guests contributed 53.57 million nights in Austrian accommodation establishments.

According to the data provided by Statistics Austria, July is the second most important summer month for tourism after August.

In July 2023, the number of nights spent by non-resident guests increased by 6.9 per cent compared to July 2022, reaching 13.83 million. On the other hand, the nights spent by resident guests decreased by 2.8 per cent, totalling 4.87 million.

The latest figures also reveal that the number of arrivals at Austrian accommodation establishments increased by 5.56 million in July 2023, thus marking a surge of 5.0 per cent compared to the same month in 2022.

During the same period, the nights spent by visitors from Germany increased by 4.7 per cent, along with other countries such as Switzerland and Liechtenstein, which experienced an increase of seven per cent. At the same time, the Czech Republic also showed a significant increase of 15.0 per cent. However, nights spent by Dutch guests, an important source market, decreased by 1.5 per cent compared to July 2022.

Moreover, from January to July 2023, a total of 93.15 million nights were registered, marking an increase of 12.67 million nights or +15.7 per cent compared to the same period a year ago. Statistics Austria’s data shows that the number of nights spent was only 2.1 per cent lower than the figures recorded in 2019, a year when 93.15 million nights were similarly registered.
