Switzerland has always been on my bucket list especially Zermatt since it’s home to the Matterhorn! Everyone knows the Matterhorn growing up because of the Matterhorn ride at Disneyland! It’s a dream come true to actually visit it in person! Zermatt is known for skiing, climbing, hiking and eating fondue! I visited during the summer and there were so many awesome activities so here’s a list of the top 8 things you cannot miss in Zermatt, Switzerland!
1. EXPLORE ZERMATT VILLAGE
The village of Zermatt is so charming and picturesque with old traditional homes and buildings. The town has always been a car free zone with only electric cars for hotels. So you will walk everywhere! When exploring and getting lost you will find the Matterhorn peeking through various areas.
2. GORNERGRAT
A must visit when in Zermatt! The Gornergrat is a rocky ridge of the Pennine Alps that over looks the Gorner Glacier. It also has amazing views of the Matterhorn. It can be reached by the Gornergrat rack railway, the highest open-air railway in Europe.
3. PARAGLIDING AROUND THE MATTERHORN
Absolutely my favorite activity in Zermatt! If you’re up for an adventure, you must go paragliding with Fly Zermatt! It was my first time and I loved it! If you’re scared of heights don’t worry it’s really not that scary. It was super easy and you fly with a guide. Do not leave Zermatt without doing this!
4. 4 LAKES HIKE
Zermatt has multiple lakes and a hike to the lakes is worth it. Each of the lakes is different by shape, color, and size.
5. MATTERHORN MUSEUM
The Matterhorn museum is unique and features exhibits on the regional history of the climbers who climbed the Matterhorn in 1865 where members fell to their deaths on the descent. Below are images of the actual roped used and belongings found from the climbers.
6. OMNIA HOTEL VIEW DECK
I’m always looking for rooftop views in each city I visit and the Omnia Hotel has an amazing deck for views of the village and Matterhorn.
7. EAT FONDUE AT POLLUX RESTAURANT
When visiting Switzerland you must have chocolate and fondue! Go to Pollux Restaurant for the best fondue and make sure to order the raclette.
8. DINE AT FINDLERHOF
One of the best meals with a view is at Findlerhof! I had the spaghetti and loved it but they’re also known for their burgers!
Zermatt has absolutely surpassed my expectations! I loved walking through the charming village, getting lost, and waking up to the Matterhorn views every day. If you’re visiting Switzerland, you must visit Zermatt!
