Don’t think a romantic sunset near Albufeira without the crowds exists in peak season? Then think again!

Praia da Gale is only a 20 minute drive away from Albufeira, and it offers a quiet romantic sunset at the beach with the most amazing views of rock formations. As a couple visiting the Algarve, you cannot miss out on this experience.

How to drive to Praia da Gale from Albufeira

To drive to Praia da Gale from Albufeira (or from anywhere else really), just put “Estrada da Galé, Albufeira” in your GPS and follow the instructions.

It took us about 20 minutes to reach Estrada da Gale from Albufeira. Once you get close to Estrada da Galé, just follow the signs to the parking. When we arrived around 6.30 pm, there were plenty of empty parking spaces to leave our car. This was quite surprising, because we visited in August and had a lot of issues with finding a parking spot during our time in the Algarve. I guess most people had already left the beach at Praia da Gale as the sun was setting.

I just looked on Google Maps, and it is about a 40 minute drive from Lagos, and a 30 minute drive from Portimao to reach Estrada da Gale.

Once you’re on the beach facing the sea, just walk to the left (with the sea on your right-hand side) to get to the rock formations:

This part of the beach is also called “Praia da Gale (Leste)”.

Where to watch the romantic sunset at Praia da Gale

The further you walk along the beach, the quieter it gets. Once you find a cute spot in the rock formations to watch the sunset from, it’s time to lay down your towels:

Doesn’t it look like we have our own private beach in the middle of the Algarve in August?! We couldn’t believe our luck when we found Praia da Gale during sunset.

Jordi climbed the rock formations to set up our tripod with the camera pointing down. At first we zoomed in using the regular lens on our phone to take some pictures with the beach. Then as the sun started setting, we used the wide angle camera to capture the rock formations and the sunset.

Once we were happy with our beachy sunset pictures, we watched the sunset from the top of the rock formations:

Once the sun set behind the sea, we walked along the beach to find our way back to the car. We also found plenty of photo opportunities on our way back to the car:

I mean, how amazing are the colours in the sky and the reflections on the beach?!

If these pictures haven’t convinced you to watch a quiet and romantic sunset at Praia da Gale, then I don’t know what will. It was definitely the most beautiful sunset we’ve seen in the Algarve, and I’d recommend it to anyone.
